Coldplay - Viva La Vida Lyrics :-

I used to rule the world
Seas would rise when I gave the word
Now in the morning I sweep alone
Sweep the streets I used to own

I used to roll the dice
Feel the fear in my enemy's eyes
Listen as the crowd would sing:
"Now the old king is dead! Long live the king!"

One minute I held the key
Next the walls were closed on me
And I discovered that my castles stand
Upon pillars of salt and pillars of sand

I hear Jerusalem bells a ringing
Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can't explain
Once you go there was never, never an honest word
That was when I ruled the world
(Ohhh)

It was the wicked and wild wind
Blew down the doors to let me in.
Shattered windows and the sound of drums
People couldn't believe what I'd become
[Viva La Vida lyrics on http://lyricsmusicvideo.blogspot.com ]

Revolutionaries wait
For my head on a silver plate
Just a puppet on a lonely string
Oh who would ever want to be king?

I hear Jerusalem bells a ringing
Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can't explain
I know Saint Peter will call my name
Never an honest word
But that was when I ruled the world
(Ohhhhh Ohhh Ohhh)

I hear Jerusalem bells a ringing
Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can't explain
I know Saint Peter will call my name
Never an honest word
But that was when I ruled the world
Oooooh Oooooh Oooooh

Great voice man. You should try out for American Idol and sing tha song. Well, after listening closely to the original song, it sounds like he says "Never a lawless World.." the third time around, and thelast time "Never an honest work.."
I've read that this song could possibly have different meanings. Some say it' about Jesus reflecting on the cross, Loius VI, John the Baptist, or Napolean.
I'm not sure exactly, but I like this song alot(until I find out that it has a bad Christian meaning). What is your interpretation of this song?

yeah i agree with the second poster. there is no way he says "Never an honest word" for one it doesn't make sense, and listening closely to it you can tell he says "work" not "word"..
"never an honest work" makes a lot more sense.

LR here. On the surface, this song is about Napoleon, but he is used to represent an archetype of a great leader who, after rising to power, becomes a tyrant who abuses his and loses everything. As such, this song encompasses timeless political and personal morals more keenly understood today than ever before - corruption of power and privilege, the fleetingness of power and privilege, the consequences of the abuse of power and privilege, even perhaps, the ephemeral quality of fame and fortune. At its heart, tho, I believe it is a cautionary tale, not just for those who seek to rule, but for who are ruled. And for what we all choose to be ruled by...

I sense a spiritual feeling trying to come across in his lyrics I wish I could find his post to know exactly what was the meaning behind them. But I do love the song!

At the lyric "Once you go there was never, never an honest word" I kinda linked it to Ivan the terrible after his wife Anastaisia died. He was good before that and then turned wicked afterwords. You may disagree but I think its a valid connection.
